Program Mission

To enhance the quality of life of developmentally/physically handicapped adults, by offering support and assistance to meet individual and family needs, through utilizing community resources and providing a warm, understanding home environment, while maintaining awareness of each person's rights, choices and individuality

Program Description

The Residential Services Program of the Kenora Association for Community Living offers a variety of residential options for adults with a developmental handicap, and provides staff support as required. The level of supervision provided is based on the principle of the"least restrictive alternative", in order to encourage the greatest level of independence and autonomy possible, and to assist consumers to develop living skills to their fullest potential. Many of the consumers involved in the residential program live in subsidized housing units, ranging from one bedroom apartments to four bedroom houses. Staff support is determined on the basis of need, and the hours of supervision may vary from one to two hours per week, to total staff support twenty-four hours per day.

The primary challenge of the Residential Services Program is to consider all that a "home" means to a member of a community, and to attempt to approximate as closely as possible the true essence of a home environment for those individuals who participate in the program.

Residentially, physical integration has been achieved by moving into smaller, more natural size groupings in neighborhoods throughout the community. In order to achieve true integration, it will be necessary to assist the consumers involved in the program to develop meaningful relationships with friends and families, to increase the level of activities that result in full and busy lives, and to provide every opportunity for growth and development as vital and contributing citizens of our community.

Bryan Booth, Rooke Pitura, and Darcia Curtis brought the Christmas spirit to the KACL RTC for two Fridays in November with offerings of delicious food. A bountiful breakfast of fresh fruit, pancakes, sausages, bacon, scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, fruit smoothies, and warm out of the oven cinnamon buns (courtesy of Rooke) were all part of the menu. This fundraiser was in support of the Kenora Christmas Miracle fund. For a nominal cost, or donation of choice, money was raised to put back into our community. Rooke and Bryan presented a sizable donation while visiting and telling Christmas stories on the Miracle Marathon couch. Bryan, Rooke and Darcia worked at a feverish pace to make sure every thing was hot out of the oven, and didn't stop until each diner was satisfied and every last dish was washed and put away. Thanks go out for a great effort and a spectacular meal.
