The Diabetic Body: An Owner’s Manual
Thursday, February 26th, 2009The inside cover of the book by the same name as the title of this blog starts off with “Think of your diabetic body as one of those fancy foreign sports cars.” I must admit I have never thought of my body as “fancy”, “foreign” or for that matter any kind of a “car”. In fact, I never thought of my body at all for most every day purposes. But as you get older, over worked, over extended in time and stress commitments, every now and again, you stop to take a pause and wonder what you should be doing to get a few more years out of your “car”. There is an advertisement currently running about a man who is “three weeks into diabetes” and he tells you he intends among other things to be present at his 4 year olds 40th birthday. The message advertises an instrument that reads blood sugar levels. Until recently, not withstanding that some relatives were “diabetic”, “pre-diabetic”, “borderline diabetic” or had had “gestational diabetes”, I knew very little about diabetes, about the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes or that many persons who have type 2 diabetes control It by diet and exercise. During the last 3 or 4 years I have heard of an ever increasing level of Child diabetes, diabetes among persons of First Nations Heritage and among our clients. I picked up this book a couple of years ago but only recently started to look through it. Whether you have diabetes or not I recommend this book to anyone who lives a fast filled, fast food diet and hectic paced life. “Your temperamental sports car requires daily maintenance and fine–tuning, a diet of premium fuel at regular intervals, and frequent inspections for trouble free operation and to avoid major repair work down the road.”
