A Budget is not a Plan or The ABCDs of Planning and Supports

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

What assumptions, concepts, values, and practices compose an “individualized” way of thinking and doing business when providing residential support?

Another assumption included in an “individualized” way of thinking and doing business when providing residential supports is that you have to get to know the individual you are going to support.. This appears to be so obvious as to not need to be stated. Consider the ABCD’s of Planning and Supports.

A represents where the consumer is At.  B represents where the consumer wants to Be.  C represents the Constraints that will have to be over comed or circumvented in order to get from A to B. D represents what you have to Do to get from A to B.

When you are planning for your own life you may have to spend some time to really get to know your self because we often carry around a superficial view of ourselves. Further because we are divided we have to develop some harmony of control. Like our country of Canada are minds are like loose confederations of parts which are constantly coming more together of falling apart. Like an elephant trainer we must also be integrating our intellect with our passions. Think how much more difficult this task is when you don’t have inside information.

Now if the task is not sufficiently difficult, agencies are constantly being ask to provide supports for new individuals without being properly funded to gain any knowledge of ithe individual. To really individualize supports to individuals, agencies have to resist such pressures and invest resources and the time necessary to really get to know the individual who will be supported
